According to new interviews with Collider, the Russo brothers confirmed that Avengers Endgame is currently being shown to test audiences at three hours long. Yes, that’s right, three whole hours of Marvel goodness.
That would make Avengers Endgame the longest MCU film to date by a wide margin.
Longest MCU Film to Date
Recent test screenings have shown that most people seem to be alright with the excessive runtime. Anthony Russo, in the Collider interview, stated “We have screened the movie four times for audiences now … For the first three screenings, not a single person got up to go to the bathroom.” That’s certainly impressive, though it may not hold up for general audiences.
At the moment, it seems that Endgame will run at a crazy length. According to some sources, the editing room even joked about including an intermission so that people could use the bathroom. While this might sound funny, we actually wouldn’t mind an intermission with a runtime that long! A chance to stretch the legs, get some snacks and hit the bathroom would be ideal.
A Good Thing?
Is a runtime that long a good thing for general audiences? It seems that’s a bit of sticking point. On the one hand, Marvel fans have been following these characters and their stories for a decade now. Seeing their ongoing tales wrap up in a climactic final battle is certainly exciting, and many die-hard fans would likely have no issue with such a long cut.
General audiences, however, might be a bit put-off by this extreme length. After all, three hours is a long time to watch RDJ and Chris Evans beat people up. Hopefully the movie is deep and engrossing enough that we won’t notice how long we’ve been glued to our seats.
