Our Favorite Tabletop Gaming and Actual Play Podcasts

At Comics & Cartridges, we don’t like to judge whether anyone is a “real” geek. But if you regularly listen to tabletop gaming podcasts… well, you might be a geek. Here are a few of our favorites!

The Adventure Zone

You can’t talk about tabletop gaming and actual play podcasts without mentioning The Adventure Zone. The long-running podcast–starring real-life brothers Justin, Travis, and Griffin along with their dad, Clint–began life as a spin-off from the McElroys’ comedy advice show.

Fans couldn’t get enough of the Dungeons and Dragons podcast, and it quickly became one of the most popular shows in its genre. They wrapped up their D&D arc and switched to the Powered by the Apocalypse system for their new campaign. Their twice-monthly podcast is available on the Maximum Fun network, but they also do live shows and just released their 2nd graphic novel adaptation of their D&D campaign.

Critical Role

Another major player in the tabletop gaming… game is Critical Role. The podcast features professional voice actors, as well as the occasional famous guest like Wil Wheaton and Felicia Day.

Although it began as a YouTube and Twitch channel, you can also listen to it in podcast form. The party wrapped up their first campaign in 2017, so you can listen to the complete arc or jump in on the new campaign.

The Secret Cabal Gaming Podcast

Unlike the actual play podcasts above, this show is more like hanging out with your buddies and talking about games. A panel of 5 friends covers everything from card games to complicated tabletop RPGs. If you’re just getting started in the gaming community and want to learn more about the types of games out there–as well as get a sense of the culture and the lingo–then you’ll want to check out The Secret Cabal Gaming Podcast.

Acquisitions Inc.

It’s worth visiting the website for this podcast just for the retro 90s design. Chris Perkins (whom you may know as a game designer for D&D) is the GM for this actual play comedy podcast. It’s also brought to you by Penny Arcade, so you know it’s gonna be funny.

In addition, there are 2 spin-off shows–Dice, Camera, Action and Acquisitions Inc: The “C” Team that you might enjoy. There are a LOT of episodes in the archive, which dates back to 2008!

Blue Peg Pink Peg

One more board game podcast for ya! Blue Peg Pink Peg is like hanging out with your family–if your family was hilarious and super geeky for board games. Unlike many of these podcasts, the cast features a female host alongside 2 guys.

In addition to learning a lot about games and gaming culture, you’ll also get to know Robb, Patrick, and Christina really well. It’s a fun, welcoming show that’s a great listen during your commute or while doing chores.

Erin Long

Erin Elizabeth Long's obsession with geek culture started young and has only grown over the years. She loves playing RPGs and has strong opinions about 'Game of Thrones.'
