If you were hoping to see the long-rumored villain Black Adam make an appearance during the credits of ‘Shazam!’ you were sorely disappointed–until now. A deleted scene on the brand-new Blu-ray hints at the character. But is it enough to tide fans over until the Dwayne Johnson solo film arrives?
A New Direction for DC
Shazam! was an unexpected delighted after years of grimdark DC movies. Along with Aquaman, the lighthearted superhero flick showed that Warner Bros. made the right decision in jettisoning the Snyder-verse and creating standalone series for their characters.
One of the slated standalone movies is about Black Adam, the super-villain (or anti-hero, depending on who you ask) who has plagued Shazam in the comics since the 1970s. Although there are several potential origin stories to draw on, it seems like this version of the character will be a former slave from ancient Egypt.
Zachary Levi Spills the Beans
Unfortunately, fans hoping to see Black Adam face off against Shazam will be disappointed–at least for now. Zachary Levi confessed at a recent convention that Black Adam won’t show up to mess up his day until the 3rd Shazam! movie at the earliest.
“I can say that as far as I know, Black Adam is not going to be in the second Shazam!,” Levi explained, “because the idea is that they want to go and do a standalone Black Adam movie first. And then it would kind of be, if we do a third Shazam! and a second Black Adam, kind of [parallel] like that, that’s where we would [meet].”
Levi claims that it is because Black Adam is the ultimate baddie for his hero. Considering that Dwayne Johnson co-produced the first film, he’s all-in on the Shazam! universe. Both the sequel to the original film and the Black Adam standalone are set to start filming next year.
The Black Adam movie has hit a few development snags, including replacing the original director with Jungle Cruise‘s Jaume Collet-Serra. However, it seems that things are finally back on track. The Rock has been cooking up quite a career as a family-friendly action star, and it’s likely that his turn as Black Adam will be a big hit–as long as the tone doesn’t get too dark.
One of the reasons Shazam! was such a huge hit is because you could take your kids to go see it.
Game of Thrones
In the deleted scene–which you can watch below–Shazam sits down on his throne alongside the other cape-and-spandex heroes in his family. They quickly realize that there are 6 heroes… but 7 thrones. Who does it belong to?
According to Darla (Meagan Good): “Whoever it is, I’m going to love them no matter what. Because they’re an automatic part of the family.”
Oh, sweet child. You have no idea!
