We knew that San Diego Comic-Con would bring us untold treasures in the form of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But we weren’t prepared for everything we found out. Here, we rank the biggest reveals from the epic Hall H panel. Are you ready?
Please note that if you want to go into Phase 4 without any whiff of spoilers, you should turn back now! We’ll be revealing casting and minor plot details in this post.
5. The Black Widow Movie Is NOT a Prequel
When the long-awaited Black Widow solo film was announced, it seemed likely that it would be an origin story. If you’ve seen Endgame, then you know why that makes more sense.
However, new details from the Marvel panel reveal that the movie will fill in the gaps for Black Widow between Civil War and Endgame. Along with Scarlett Johansson, the film will star Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Rachel Weisz.
4. ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ Looks Lit
Marvel’s first Asian superhero will arrive on the big screen during Phase 4. Shang-Chi will be played by Simu Liu, who has been lobbying for the role for years on social media. He’ll be joined by Awkwafina and Tony Leung–who is playing the real, actual, not-Ben-Kingsley-just-pretending Mandarin.
3. The Cast of ‘The Eternals’ Is Amazing
We’d heard bits and pieces of this casting news before the Marvel panel, but now it’s official. Director Chloé Zhao assembled a stellar cast that includes Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie!
Now, we’re still hoping that Keanu ends up being part of The Eternals. He expressed his interest in joining the MCU, and rumors have been swirling that this movie–which has no ties to the Marvel films we’ve already seen–would be a great fit. You know, because he seems to be an ageless Eternal in real life.
2. Thor: Blood and Thunder
Taika Waititi is coming back for another film after helming Thor: Ragnarok. That movie was unarguably the best Thor movie and one of the best Marvel films overall.
In Thor: Blood and Thunder, Tessa Thompson will be back as Valkyrie, now the king of New Asgard. And it’s official that the character–who is bisexual in the comics–will be canonically queer in the new movie.
And even more shocking, Jane Foster (played by Natalie Portman) will not only return to the franchise but actually take up Mjolnir to become Thor. Whaaat?
1. Mahershala Ali IS Blade!
This was the last announcement during the Marvel panel, and also–arguably–the biggest. Rumors had been swirling about a Blade remake, and Mahershala Ali’s name had been thrown out there. But unlike most fan casting, this one turned out to be true.
The 2-time Oscar winner will be stepping into Wesley Snipes’ shoes, and we couldn’t be more excited about the casting. But will the new Blade be rated PG-13? The originals are rated R, so either Disney/Marvel will be branching out into darker, harder fare, or else they’ll be pulling Blade’s fangs.
